What is Potassium Nitrate?
Potassium nitrate, also known as saltpeter, niter, or E252, is a chemical compound with the formula KNO₃. It is a potassium salt of nitric acid, naturally occurring as the mineral nitrokalite, primarily in arid, high-temperature regions. Historically referred to as Indian saltpeter, it was originally mined in large quantities in India.
Industrial production of potassium nitrate typically involves the reaction of sodium nitrate and potassium chloride, resulting in KNO₃ and sodium chloride as a byproduct. This compound appears as a white crystalline solid with a high melting point of 334°C. When heated, it decomposes into potassium nitrite and oxygen, making it a highly effective oxidizing agent used in various industries.
Potassium Nitrate in Agriculture
Agriculture accounts for approximately 75% of global potassium nitrate production, where it is widely used as a fertilizer. Potassium nitrate fertilizer is a preferred water-soluble source of potassium and nitrogen, essential nutrients for plant growth.
