Sodium Tetraborate Pentahydrate – Chemical Properties
Sodium Tetraborate Pentahydrate, also known as Borax 5-hydrate or Disodium Tetraborate Pentahydrate, is a chemical compound with the formula Na₂B₄O₇·5H₂O. It appears as colorless, odorless crystals that gradually weather when outside and are moderately soluble in water. The molecular weight of this compound is approximately 291.3 g/mol, and it begins to lose its water of hydration at around 122°C (252°F). Borax Pentahydrate is used across various industries, including glass manufacturing, ceramics, fertilizers, and cosmetics.
- Melting point: 200°C (392°F)
- Density: 1.82 g/cm³
- Solubility: Soluble in water (3% at room temperature)

Industrial Applications of Borax 5-Hydrate
In industrial processes, Disodium Tetraborate Pentahydrate plays a crucial role in various sectors:
- Glazes and enamels: As a key ingredient in ceramics and glass manufacturing, Borax 5-hydrate serves as a flux, lowering the melting point of silica. It improves the durability of glazes and helps achieve a smooth finish.
- Flux in soldering: In metallurgy, Borax Pentahydrate acts as a fluxing agent, preventing metal oxidation during soldering processes. This ensures strong, reliable bonds in electronic and plumbing components.

Sodium Tetraborate Pentahydrate as a Cleaning Agent
Borax 5-Hydrate is widely used in cleaning products due to its effectiveness and safety:
- Laundry detergents: Enhances the performance of detergents by softening water, allowing surfactants to work more efficiently. This leads to brighter fabrics and improved cleaning results.
- Household cleaners: Borax is a common ingredient in surface cleaners, helping eliminate odors and stubborn stains.

Borax Pentahydrate in Textile Treatment and Fire-resistant Products
This compound is also essential in fire protection applications:
- Textiles: Borax Pentahydrate is used to impregnate fabrics, enhancing fire resistance. This is particularly important for upholstery, curtains, and other textile materials.
- Wood treatment: Borax 5-hydrate serves as a fire retardant in wood products, reducing flammability and improving fire safety in construction materials. This application is especially beneficial in environments where fire prevention is critical.
