Borax Decahydrate – Chemical and Physical Properties
Sodium tetraborate, commonly known as borax decahydrate, is an inorganic compound with the formula (Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O). It appears as colorless crystals and is the sodium salt of boric acid, highly soluble in water. Thanks to its low toxicity and fluxing properties, borax is a valuable component in numerous industrial applications.
When heated, it loses its crystal water and transitions to an anhydrous form at temperatures between 300–400°C. A distinctive feature of borax is that it colors flames green, a common trait of boron compounds. Borax occurs naturally as a mineral, including native borax and its partially dehydrated forms, such as tincalconite and kernite. With a Mohs hardness of 2–2.5, it is considered a relatively soft mineral.
Other names for borax include Borax Decahydrate, Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate, Disodium Tetraborate Decahydrate, Sodium Tetraborate, Borax, E285.

Borax in Glass and Ceramics Production
Borax is essential in glass and ceramic manufacturing. It acts as a flux, reducing the melting point of silica and making glass formation easier. Additionally, it improves the adhesion and surface finish of ceramic products. Sodium tetraborate is also a key ingredient in the production of glass wool insulation.

Borax in Metallurgy
In metallurgy, borax serves as a fluxing agent in welding and soldering, facilitating the fusion of metals. Its fire-retardant properties also make it a valuable component in flame-resistant materials.

Borax in Cleaning Products
Borax is a key raw material for producing sodium perborate (NaBO₃), widely used as a bleaching agent in detergents, particularly in Europe. Borax is a powerful disinfectant, deodorizer, and desiccant. Thanks to its antifungal properties, it effectively eliminates mold and mildew. Additionally, it is used as a natural insecticide against ants, grubs, cockroaches, and wasps.

Borax in Agriculture
Borax decahydrate is a substantial ingredient in fertilizers, particularly in regions with boron-deficient soils. As a micronutrient, it enhances crop yields and improves plant disease resistance.

Borax in Pharmaceuticals
Disodium tetraborate decahydrate is applicable in pharmaceutical applications, where it functions as a buffering agent and preservative in various formulations.
